- OSHA Standards: OSHA requires platforms 4 feet or higher to have guardrails at least 42 inches tall that can withstand 200 pounds of force, plus sturdy toeboards at least 3.5 inches in height Stairs must meet uniform riser (max 9.5ʺ) and tread depth (min 9.5ʺ) standards, and landings must be at least 30ʺ deep.
- MSHA Standards: Under MSHA, crossovers, elevated walkways, and stairways must be of robust construction, furnished with guardrails—and, where needed, toeboards—to safeguard miners in both surface and underground operations
