North Western Steel Safety Program
At North Western Steel, safety is not a box we check — it is the foundation of how we operate. Every project, from a tailgate sketch to a multi-ton structural installation, begins with safety planning built into the design, fabrication, and execution. Our program is structured to meet and exceed OSHA and MSHA standards, ensuring the well-being of our employees, clients, and the communities we serve.
Key Elements of Our Safety Program
- Comprehensive Training: All team members complete task-specific safety training, including fall protection, crane and rigging, confined space entry, hot work, respiratory protection, and lockout/tagout. Certifications such as AWS D1.1/D14.1/D1.6 welding, forklift, aerial lift, and MSHA Part 46/48 are standard across our workforce.
- Proactive Hazard Assessments: Each job site undergoes a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and pre-task risk assessment before work begins. Toolbox talks are conducted daily to align crews on hazards, controls, and responsibilities.
- Equipment Inspections: Rigging, welding machines, forklifts, platforms, ladders, and PPE are inspected on a scheduled basis, with forms logged and tracked in our safety manual (NWS-CI-001 series). Deficiencies are corrected immediately to keep equipment field-ready.
- Health & Industrial Hygiene: We monitor noise, dust, and fume exposures, providing appropriate PPE and engineering controls. Respirator fit-testing and medical clearances are maintained for all affected employees.
- Culture of Accountability: Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Employees are empowered to stop work if unsafe conditions are identified, without fear of repercussion. Supervisors and project managers reinforce safety-first decisions with leadership backing.
- Continuous Improvement: Incident investigations, near-miss reporting, and client feedback are used to refine procedures, update training, and improve engineering solutions. Lessons learned are shared across the company to prevent recurrence.
Why It Matters
By embedding safety into our work, North Western Steel not only protects its people but also delivers higher-quality projects, with fewer delays, and the confidence that every platform, guardrail, weld, or repair meets strict safety and engineering standards. Our goal is simple: every employee goes home safe, every day, and every client project passes compliance without exception.
